TAX FAIRNESS FOR NEW CASTLE COUNTY RENTERS
New Castle County renters are facing significant rent increases driven by a new law.
When New Castle County reassessed property values, apartment buildings got classified and taxed like commercial properties — warehouses and shopping centers, not homes.
The problem: Apartment buildings, like yours, are taxed at roughly twice the rate of your neighbor in a house down the street. This means you will be facing even bigger rent increases if the Delaware General Assembly doesn’t act to fix the problem.
The fix: Legislators should pass a new bill that would create a new tax classification for multifamily housing — treating your apartment more like a home and less like a warehouse. It would reduce the policy-driven cost that passes through to your rent every month.
